5 Healthy Habits You Should (Probably) Already Have

In this day and age, it can sometimes feel like there are a million things we should be doing, especially when it comes to our health. Well, there’s a reason for that… but it’s not like we’re going to give you a million habits to pick up! No, no – five habits is much more manageable. So how many of these are you already doing? And how many do you swear you’ll start tomorrow?

5. Make time for yourself

Let’s begin with a habit that can relieve stress, anxiety, and the general mental wear-and-tear we all endure these days. The concept behind mindfulness tells us that by simply focusing our attention on the present moment for as little as 10 minutes per day, we can give ourselves some mental breathing room. If stuff is getting on top of you, look into mindfulness – it could just be a habit that changes your life.

4. Get your 10,000 steps per day

How much do you walk every day? If you have a sit-down office job, it might not be enough. Now that activity monitors are all the rage, a general rule of thumb has emerged as the recommendation: 10,000 steps per day. This equates to a couple of mile’s worth of foot-work, and it’s enough to keep your weight stable and to optimise your energy levels.

3. Cut down on the sweet stuff

We get it: sugar is awesome. But it’s also pretty bad for you – especially in large quantities. If you have a sweet tooth, it might be worth making a habit of cutting down. By minimising things like sugars in your tea, or replacing things like chocolate with healthier options, you can keep yourself in good shape without too much extra work.

2. Drink 2 litres of water per day

You’re actually made mostly of water, so it’s safe to say it’s pretty important. So why do many of us spend all day throwing coffee down our necks? Government guidelines suggest that around 2 litres of water per day is the recommended intake, although some of this can come in the form of soft drinks. Adequate water intake will aid with detoxification, stave off headaches, and even help you feel fuller when losing weight – winner!

1. Make sure you get enough sleep

This one’s a biggie. Whether you realise it or not, ensuring you get adequate sleep is an essential cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Without at least 6-8 hours per night (it varies person to person), you can find yourself suffering with stress, mood problems, a less effective immune system, and a plethora of other problems. Can sleep really make that much difference? Yes it can – so make sure you pick up the habit of getting enough!
