Sweet Success: What’s All the Fuss About Stevia?

doughnuts

It’s no secret that artificial sweeteners can taste pretty bad.

Not only that, but they can also be really bad for you. That’s a whole lot of bad for something that’s supposed to be good for you! But there is an answer, and it comes in the form of the world’s most successful sweetener: stevia. Whether you’re already enjoying it or it’s all new to you, here’s everything you need to know about stevia.

So… what exactly is stevia?

Let’s begin with the absolute basics. Stevia may sound like Boys Name of the Year 2015, but the reality is that stevia is a plant-based sugar replacement ingredient which is found in an increasing number of foods. Believe it or not, stevia is actually 200 times sweeter than sugar, but actually contains zero calories. That’s right: zilch, nil, nada. Stevia itself is derived from a plant which is a member of the Asteraceae family, which is about as technical as we’re going to get here. Instead, let’s focus on why stevia is making more of an appearance in foods across the board, and its many benefits too.

The health benefits of stevia

So we already know that stevia is just as sweet in smaller quantities as sugar, and that it’s calorie-free, but what other benefits does it offer? Well, quite a few! Here are a handful of our favourites:

  • Stevia is good for diabetics. It’s well-known that sugar is bad for people with diabetes, for obvious reasons. Stevia has a GI (Glycemic Index) of… wait for it… zero. Yep! That means it’s fine for diabetics, so they too can enjoy sweetened foods.
  • Stevia is free of side-effects. Unlike sugar and aspartame, the plant-based stevia is totally free of side-effects. These can range from headaches to weight gain, so it’s easy to see why stevia is such a smart idea for sugar fans.
  • Stevia controls blood pressure. Just when you thought it couldn’t get more wonderful, stevia hits you with this one. The sweetener can actually keep high blood pressure in check, preventing dangerous conditions like hypertension. These effects were proven by a study conducted by the Brazilian Journal of Biology.

Sounds pretty good, right? So let’s take a look at how you can introduce stevia to your lifestyle.
